West Ham have moved to strengthen their midfield options by signing Joao Mario from Inter Milan. The Portuguese star, a Euro 2016 winner, has moved for increased playing minutes with a view to making the Seleccao’s Euro 2018 squad, and could see plenty of action with Manuel Lanzini expected to be out for an extended period of time following the injury he picked up in the club’s 1-1 draw against Bournemouth
Coach David Moyes and other Hammer fan blogs have reckoned that Mario, 25, has some Lanzini like qualities in him. He is versatile, capable of playing off the left or the right or even as a 10, and the Hammers will hope that he can lend them some much needed creativity in the absence of the Argentine.
Mario has played the full 90 once twice for Inter this season, against Crotone and Chievo, and has only started 5 times this season for the Nerazzurri. He was an unused sub on the bench for the club’s draw against Roma, his last before the West ham transfer was made official.
