German football magazine Der Kicker has confirmed that Bundesliga side Schalke have inquired about the availability of Tottenham schemer Rafael van der Vaart. The move may surprise the White Hart Lane faithful, who have taken the Dutchman to their hearts since his transfer from Real Madrid.
But a transfer to Germany may have some attraction for the twenty nine year old, who spent three years with Schalke’s Bundesliga rivals Hamburg before the move to Real. Firstly, his wife Sylvie has a successful television career in Germany and secondly his former coach at Hamburg and compatriot Huub Stevens is now Schalke’s boss and his Dutch international team mate Klas Jan Hunterlaar their star striker.
However the financial details may be the stumbling block for the Germans and they are more likely to turn their attention to Chelsea’s Salomon Kalou in the hunt to replace departing Spanish star Raul.
